Join Us for an Engaging Book Discussion! The Charleston Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (CHS ASALH) invites members and the community to a meaningful conversation about Margaret Seidler’s “Payne-ful Business: Charleston’s Journey to Truth.” 📚 About the Book: “Payne-ful Business” is a powerful exploration of Charleston’s racial history and its impact on the present. Drawing from her family’s genealogy, Margaret Seidler unearths complex truths through personal reflection and thorough research. The book also shines a light on the labor of enslaved people and their vital contributions to Charleston’s development. Her work features authentic historic slave advertisements vividly brought to life by artist John W. Jones, revealing the humanity behind detached descriptions.  Additionally, it stresses the ongoing struggles and triumphs of women’s labor, bridging the realities of a bygone era with the working lives of women in the 21st century. Seidler’s book bridges today’s racial divides by confronting our shared history. 🎤 About the Author: Margaret Seidler, a CHS ASALH member and Charleston native, is a retired Organization & Leadership Development consultant, national speaker, and published author. She played a key role in the Charleston Illumination Project, a year-long initiative to improve citizen-police relationships following the Mother Emanuel tragedy. Seidler’s impactful work has been featured in publications by Harvard Business Review and Oxford University Press. 📅 Event Details: Date: Tuesday, February 18th Time: 6:00 PM Location: Hurd/St. Andrews Library, CCPL – 1735 N Woodmere DrCharleston, SC 29407 Join us for this thought-provoking discussion and gain a deeper understanding of Charleston’s history through Seidler’s lens.
