*NEW DATE* CHS Area ASALH Joins Charleston Gaillard Center & Buxton Books for “A Conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates”

A Conversation with Ta-Nehisi Coates
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates, will discuss his latest book, The Message, at the Gaillard Center as part of their Fall for Democracy program. In this new work, Coates explores the stories we tell—and the ones we omit—to understand how they shape our realities. His insights into contemporary social issues and civic discourse make this discussion a timely and relevant event for our community.
The Message is a reflective book, originally intended to study writing in the tradition of Orwell’s Politics and the English Language. However, Coates found himself confronting more questions about how our narratives—whether in journalism, literature, or national mythmaking—reveal and obscure the truth. The book unfolds in three intertwining essays: in Dakar, where Coates navigates the tension between modernity and myth; in Columbia, South Carolina, where he examines the backlash to America’s historical reckoning; and in Palestine, where he witnesses firsthand the destructive power of nationalist narratives. Written during a pivotal moment in American and global history, The Message challenges us to disentangle ourselves from the myths that bind us and embrace the difficult but liberating truths beneath.
