Whether you’re organizing a lecture, cultural festival, book talk, or historical commemoration, we invite you to submit your event for consideration. Our goal is to provide a central hub where community members can stay informed and engaged with meaningful events throughout Charleston and surrounding areas. All submissions will be reviewed for alignment with ASALH’s mission before being added to the calendar. Thank you for helping us connect, educate, and celebrate African American heritage together!

27th Annual Middle Passage Ancestor Remembrance Ceremony at Fort Moultrie, Sullivan’s Island, SC – June 8, 2024

You’re invited to join us on Saturday, June 8, 2024, for the 27th Annual Middle Passage Ancestor Remembrance Ceremony at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, SC. This meaningful event is a time to come together and pay tribute to the strength and courage of our ancestors who endured the horrific hardships of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The day will be filled with reflections, starting at 9:00 am and concluding at 1:00 pm. Join us for a drum procession, community remarks, and a special Libation Ceremony at noon.
The annual commemoration provides an opportunity for members of the African-descended community to collectively remember the victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the millions sold, kidnapped, and lost during the Middle Passage. We also honor the survivors of this horrific trafficking of human beings, known as the Maafa or Black Holocaust.
This great ceremony is held simultaneously at various locations across the country and internationally, including Brooklyn, NY; Washington, DC; Georgetown, SC; Hampton, VA; New Orleans, LA; Houston, TX; Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland, CA; Montgomery, AL; Miami, FL; Detroit, MI, etc. Tributes are also held internationally in parts of West Africa, The Caribbean, and South and Central America. This momentous event symbolizes our collective remembrance and unity. Admission is free, and all are welcome. Please consider bringing fresh flowers as an offering and wearing white attire as a mark of respect. Stay tuned for more details in the upcoming weeks. We look forward to gathering with you as we honor our past and strengthen our community bonds.
