The Charleston Area Branch of ASALH welcomes community submissions for our Community Events Calendar, a space dedicated to sharing programs, gatherings, and initiatives that highlight African American history, culture, and education. Whether you’re organizing a lecture, cultural festival, book talk, or historical commemoration, we invite you to submit your event for consideration. Our goal is to provide a central hub where community members can stay informed and engaged with meaningful events throughout Charleston and surrounding areas. All submissions will be reviewed for alignment with ASALH’s mission before being added to the calendar. Thank you for helping us connect, educate, and celebrate African American heritage together!

The Colour of Music Festival Celebrates Black Excellence During Black History Month

The Charleston Area Branch of ASALH is proud to have been the first local organization to support the 2013 debut of the Colour of Music Festival, celebrating Black classical musicians. Our members were the very first audience to rally others to attend and support this historic concert series. As we reflect on that legacy, we invite our members and the Charleston community to continue showing up and supporting this incredible Black institution as it forges ahead in claiming its rightful place in a space where challenges persist.
The Colour of Music Festival returns to Charleston from February 5–8, 2025, with a dynamic program honoring Black History Month. Featuring leading Black artists from around the globe, the festival presents orchestral works, chamber music, piano and vocal recitals, and community education events across the Lowcountry. This year’s spotlight includes Charleston premieres, a literary presentation, and a focus on Black female artists and composers.
For more information on dates, times, venues, and tickets, visit the Colour of Music’s website or click the link below.
We encourage you to attend, support, and celebrate this one-of-a-kind event that uplifts Black excellence in classical music. Let’s show our continued commitment to preserving and promoting Black history and culture—see you in the audience!
