“The Charleston Museum’s Beyond the Ashes Exhibit: An Excluxive Tour with Charleston Area Branch ASALH Members”

On October 23, 2024, Charleston Area Branch ASALH members enjoyed a private tour of the Charleston Museum’s newest exhibit, Beyond the Ashes: The Lowcountry’s New Beginnings. Opened to the public on October 25, this exhibit traces the transformation of the Lowcountry from Reconstruction through the 21st century.

Key displays highlight pivotal eras, including an Edisto Island church pew crafted by enslaved people and later reclaimed by freed worshippers, and an academic medal from the Shaw Memorial School, emphasizing the importance of education for formerly enslaved people in building new futures.

A standout section on the Civil Rights movement features contributions from Dr. Millicent Brown, one of the first students to integrate Charleston County schools, and personal items from her father, NAACP leader J. Arthur Brown, and activist William “Bill” Saunders.

The exhibit also explores Charleston’s trials and strength through the 20th century, including the devastation of Hurricane Hugo, represented by a McClellanville clock frozen at 12:54 AM, the storm’s peak. Closing with a powerful quilt honoring victims of the Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting, Beyond the Ashes reflects on the mosaic of the Lowcountry—one that persists, shaped by a layered history of struggle, resilience, and determination.
