The Charleston Area Branch of ASALH welcomes community submissions for our Community Events Calendar, a space dedicated to sharing programs, gatherings, and initiatives that highlight African American history, culture, and education. Whether you’re organizing a lecture, cultural festival, book talk, or historical commemoration, we invite you to submit your event for consideration. Our goal is to provide a central hub where community members can stay informed and engaged with meaningful events throughout Charleston and surrounding areas. All submissions will be reviewed for alignment with ASALH’s mission before being added to the calendar. Thank you for helping us connect, educate, and celebrate African American heritage together!

Dr Carter G. Woodson’s Birthday Celebration – Hurd/St. Andrews Library
Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the Father of Black History, dedicated his life to documenting and preserving the achievements of Black Americans. Born in 1875 to formerly enslaved parents, Woodson was largely self-taught, yet he earned his high school diploma in two years and later graduated with a degree in Literature from Berea College. He went on to found the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) in 1915, motivated by barriers he faced in the historical community, including exclusion from conferences despite being a paying member. Woodson’s determination led him to establish “Negro History Week” in 1926, which he intentionally scheduled during February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. This initiative later evolved into what we now know as Black History Month, a celebration observed nationwide.
Woodson’s legacy survives through ASALH’s continued work promoting Black history and culture worldwide. The organization remains a vital force in researching and sharing Black life and history, setting the annual theme for Black History Month, publishing educational resources, and supporting historical projects. Through his vision and determination, Dr. Woodson gave Black Americans a voice in historical scholarship, ensuring that their contributions to the nation’s history would not be forgotten. As we commemorate his birthday, we give thanks and honor his lifelong dedication to truth and empowerment.
