The Charleston Area Branch of ASALH welcomes community submissions for our Community Events Calendar, a space dedicated to sharing programs, gatherings, and initiatives that highlight African American history, culture, and education. Whether you’re organizing a lecture, cultural festival, book talk, or historical commemoration, we invite you to submit your event for consideration. Our goal is to provide a central hub where community members can stay informed and engaged with meaningful events throughout Charleston and surrounding areas. All submissions will be reviewed for alignment with ASALH’s mission before being added to the calendar. Thank you for helping us connect, educate, and celebrate African American heritage together!

In Conversation with Dr. Fields-Black on “COMBEE” and Harriet Tubman’s Daring Raid
“The Charleston Library Society and Buxton Books, along with community partners Lowcountry Land Trust, Avery Institute, and the SC Historical Society are honored to host renowned author and historian Dr. Edda Fields-Black in conversation to discuss her most recent publication, COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War. In her book, Dr. Fields-Black dives into the story of the Combahee River Raid, one of Harriet Tubman’s most extraordinary accomplishments, based on original documents written by a descendant of one of the participants. Helping to shape the conversation will be Chief Conservation Officer of the Lowcountry Land Trust, David Ray.

The Charleston Library Society (CLS) is a historic gem in Charleston, South Carolina, dating back to 1748. It holds the title of the oldest cultural institution in the South and the second-oldest lending library in the nation. The CLS is a cultural institution for life-long learning, serving its members, the Lowcountry community, and scholars through access to its rich collection of books, historical manuscripts, and archival material and programs promoting discussion and understanding of the ideas they contain.
