Tuffus Zimbabwe Presents The Music of Charleston Composer Edmond T Jenkins: St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church ~ April 28th, 2024

Continuing this year’s ASALH Black History 2024 theme, African Americans and the Arts, the Charleston Area Branch ASALH invites you to support a wonderful local event. Tiffus Zimbabwe, a celebrated pianist and composer, brings Charleston’s musical legacy to the forefront yet again. His Gullahroots run deep, with his great-grandparents establishing the renowned Jenkins Orphanage and its influential band in 1891. This band, led by his visionary great-uncle Edmund Thornton Jenkins, played an important role in shaping the iconic Charleston music and dance style. Edmund himself was a musical genius and major innovator of Charleston jazz.

“My great-uncle, Edmund Thornton Jenkins, was a musical genius and composer. He was great on many instruments, including clarinet, saxophone, piano, and violin. I’ve restored Edmund’s music catalog and have had derivative works performed with orchestras and festivals such as Spoleto, Colour of Music, the Charleston Symphony, the Albany Symphony Orchestra in Albany, Georgia, and the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra.” ~ Tuffus Zimbabwe

Prepare to be transported by the swinging sounds of the Charleston era, infused with jazz, blues, and the unmistakable Gullah influence. Tuffus will be joined by Mark Sterbank on saxophone, and Kevin Hamilton on bass. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience Charleston’s musical heritage!

This event is FREE to the public.
