Charleston ASALH Mourns the Loss of Long-Time Member and Activist, Ruth (McClain) Rambo

Ruth Rambo lived an amazing life of courageous activism after graduating from Fisk University in the 1960s. She became one of the earliest female directors at the Urban League. Her role in the organization was marked by a landmark lawsuit in 1975, where she confronted gender discrimination within the Essex Co. Urban League, alleging denial of the Executive Director position based solely on her gender.

From her involvement with the Comprehensive Manpower Delivery System to leadership positions in esteemed organizations like the Business Coordinating Council and the Greater Newark Urban Coalition, she was a passionate advocate for progress and equality. Her activism resonated on the national stage, leading the New Jersey delegation to the 1977 National Women’s Conference. Her commitment to societal change persisted as she continued her work at AARP in Washington DC.

Settling in Charleston, SC, Ruth found great fulfillment as a member of the Charleston Area Branch ASALH and we are grateful for her long-time commitment and unwavering dedication. Please join us as we offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of our now, great Ancestor, Ruth Rambo.
