Charleston ASALH joins Avery Research Center: Book Signing and Discussion for Another Sojourner Looking for Truth: Featuring Dr. Millicent E. Brown, April 27th

Millicent E. Brown’s roots in Charleston, South Carolina, entail a journey of civil rights activism from her childhood. Her role as the plaintiff in a groundbreaking 1963 court case, which desegregated South Carolina’s public schools, solidified her dedication to racial justice for a lifetime. In her memoir, “Another Sojourner Looking for Truth,” Brown delves into her pursuit of freedom in the face of pervasive white supremacist ideologies and racial violence.

Brown wrestled with societal expectations, challenging negative stereotypes of African Americans. Her memoir offers intimate insights into the intricate dynamics of the civil rights movement and the obstacles encountered in opposing white backlash.

While Brown’s academic tenure as a retired Associate Professor of History at Claflin University is impressive, her advocacy extends far beyond the classroom. Through consultancy work with museums, historical sites, and community organizations, she educates others about the ongoing struggle for civil rights. With great determination, Brown urges society to confront the realities of racial inequality, ensuring that the legacy of the civil rights movement remains today.
