Charleston Area ASALH Supports Burke High School Band: Fostering Musical Talent and Opportunities

In alignment with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History’s (ASALH) 2024 Black History Month theme, “African Americans in the Arts,” the Charleston Area ASALH is proud to spotlight the Burke High School band program, a vibrant gem in our community that nurtures young musicians and provides them with remarkable opportunities in the arts.

Mr. McCloud’s dedication extends beyond music instruction; he has organized an annual HBCU Band Scholarship Fair, a unique event that draws talent scouts from over 14 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), for over 2 decades. During this fair, band staffers conduct auditions right at Burke High School, assessing students from the local area and hopefuls traveling from other parts of South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and beyond. This event has been pivotal in opening doors for numerous students to receive potentially millions in scholarships that support their academic and musical pursuits at various HBCUs.

This year, the Charleston Area ASALH is especially excited to invite the community to attend the Burke High School Band’s 2024 Spring Concert. Scheduled for May 16 at 7 PM, the concert promises to be a delightful showcase of the talent cultivated by Mr. McCloud and his students. The performance will take place in the Burke Auditorium and offers a wonderful opportunity for community members to experience firsthand the artistic excellence bred by the Burke band program.

Celebrating local artists like Mr. McCloud, his students, and other musicians and artists is central to the mission of the Charleston Area ASALH, as it highlights the significant role that African American artists play in enriching our culture and inspiring the next generation. We hope to see a strong community turnout to support these young musicians and celebrate their achievements in the spirit of this year’s Black History Month theme!
