World Heritage USA and The Charleston Forum are excited to co-host a panel event titled Aspiring Toward a Common History at Mother Emanuel AME Church on July 21, 2023. Join us as we engage in powerful dialogue that delves into the complexities of racial and cultural history with a focus on public monuments.
The Charleston Forum hosts events annually to bring together community members to discuss important issues involving race. This year’s event will be part of a bi-coastal series hosted by World Heritage USA titled Monuments Summer: A Season of Dialogue.
The evening will feature two panel conversations, from 6 – 9 p.m., one with southeastern historians and one with mayors. Both will be moderated by Rev. Nelson Rivers.
Announced panelists include:
Ty Seidule – Professor Emeritus of History, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, author of Robert E. Lee and Me
Dr. Tamara T. Butler – Executive Director, Avery Research Center; College of Charleston
Dr. Adam Domby – Associate Professor of History, Auburn University, author of The False Cause: Fraud, Fabrication, and White Supremacy in Confederate Memory
Dr. Felice Knight – Assistant Professor of History and Co-Director of the Truth Racial Healing and Transformation Center, The Citadel
Michael Allen – Distinguished retired National Park ranger and former Education and Community Partnership Specialist for the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor
Mayor John Tecklenburg – Mayor of Charleston, S.C.
Mayor William Bell – Former Mayor of Birmingham, Ala.
