ASALH joins Avery Research at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel, South Carolina to delve into the harsh experiences of African men, women, and children enslaved on Lowcountry rice plantations. We will explore the history of Caw Caw Swamp, once used by Indigenous communities for hunting before European settlement. Notably, Caw Caw Swamp stands as the sole documented site of the Stono Rebellion and played a pivotal role in several rice plantations. Enslaved Africans, drawing on their expertise in rice agriculture, transformed the landscape, creating extensive rice fields in the area.
