Decoration Day & Charleston’s Gullah Community: Honoring the Fallen First – Memorial Day
The Gullah people of Charleston, South Carolina, hold a special place in Memorial Day history. Charleston ASALH Mourns the Loss of Long-Time Member and Activist, Ruth (McClain) Rambo
Ruth Rambo, formerly known as Ruth McClain, blazed a trail in activism after graduating from Fisk University in the 1960s. She rose to become one of the earliest female directors at the Urban League and confronted gender discrimination in a landmark lawsuit. Her influence reached national levels, leading the New Jersey delegation to the 1977 National Women’s Conference.
